As a result of its harsh winter climate and forested mountain environment, and subsequent fusion of Kyoto and Edo, the Hida region has a unique cultural heritage. Renowned for its quality and variety of crafts, particularly woodwork, pottery, and textiles, Takayama, the city at the heart of Hida, is the only place you can truly experience this rich heritage. In addition to local workshops and retail outlets, there are a number of long-established family businesses that have passed on their secrets of the trade faithfully over the generations. They offer both traditional crafts, such as Sashiko patchwork and Hanga wood block prints, as well as traditional crafts of ‘high’ culture, such as intricate wooden carvings and Shunkeinuri lacquerware.
As you travel through these local craft shops on this tour, your knowledgeable guide will provide fascinating insights into the origins, history, and production techniques of the Hida craftsmanship that you will encounter. Guests will be consulted on the exact itinerary to ensure that it caters to their specific interests.
